Even though we can rarely see scarecrows in a city,

we often see them in a country side!

They’re made to protect crops from damages by birds or wild animals.

We sometimes see such detailed ones

that not only animals but people are also surprised!

Let’s make such scarecrows with origami paper!

We need each paper for a face, a body and a leg separately!

Since it’s not that hard for each procedure, let’s give it a try!

<Face>

1. Get a half-cut origami paper ready.

Fold it in half vertically along the dotted line and make a crease.

image016

2. Fold it in half horizontally along the dotted line.

image017

3. Fold only one layer up along the dotted line.

image018

4. Fold it down along the dotted line.

image019

<Body>

12. You don’t have to cut it in half for this one.

Fold it in half twice to make two creases.

image027

image028

14. Turn it over.

image029

15. Open each side from the arrows and fold them along the dotted lines.

image030

image031

image032

18. Fold it up along the dotted line.

image033

19. Fold it up along the dotted line.

image034

20. Fold it down along the dotted line.

image035

21. Fold both sides toward the middle along the dotted lines.

image036

22. And the body’s done!

image037

<Leg>

23. Get the vertically-1/4-cut origami paper ready.

image038

24. Fold them along the dotted lines.

image039

25. And the leg is ready!

image040

<Put the parts together>

26. First, insert the leg into the body.

You can use glue or tape to put them together.

image041

27. Turn the body over and put the face on it.

If you tilt the face a little, it will look like a real one. And it’s completed!

Speaking of scarecrow, we can imagine the facial expression ‘Henoheno Moheji’

(groups of hiragana characters which are arranged to look like a face)

It might be a good idea to use colorful origami paper to make a stylish scarecrow too!
