Origami: How to fold an Ostrich

Ostriches have slender bodies with their long neck and legs.

The total height is almost 3 meters.

 

They are also known as a fast runner,

but did you know that they can run 60 ~ 70 km per hour?

 

They sure look powerful

How to fold an ostrich Ver.1

 

First, let’s make an easy one!

The thick neck and fluffy round feather look so real!

 

1. Get a sheet of origami paper ready.

Put the colored side facing up and fold it in half to make a crease along the dotted line.

2. Fold both sides to the crease that you made.

3. Fold both corners along the dotted lines at the 1/2 middle line. (a valley fold)

4. Fold it in half. (a mountain fold)

5. Fold the white corner up as if you cover the rest of the part, along the dotted line.

6. Fold the right corner along the dotted line and fold the part inside,

as picture No.7 shows.

7. Change the direction.

8. It’s getting there, right?

Fold the neck part as if it covers the other parts to make a face.

9. Draw eyes and it’s done!

How is it?

The neck and the feather part are just like a real ostrich, right?

Since it has short legs, maybe it is a child’s ostrich?

It’s so cute, isn’t it?

How to fold an ostrich Ver.2

 

This is more real ostrich.

Since the procedure is the same as origami crane until the middle of it,

it might be easy for you!

 

1. Get a sheet of origami paper ready.  Fold it in half to make a triangle.

2. Fold it in half again.

3. Open the bag part and fold it to make a square.

Do the same thing for the other side too.

4. Fold both sides to the middle along the dotted lines.

5. Open them up and fold it along the creases.

Do the same thing for the other side too.

6.Turn over one layer to the right.

7. Fold both sides to the middle along the dotted lines.

8. Turn over one layer to the right.

9. Fold it and make a crease along the gray line.

10. Fold it to the crease.

11. Fold it the same way for the other side too.

12. Again fold it up along the dotted line.

13. Fold it along the dotted line

and fold the bigger triangle inside as picture No.14 show.

It will be the neck part.

14. Turn it over.

15. Fold it along the dotted line. (a mountain fold)

It will be like the picture below if you see it from the front

16. It is getting like an ostrich, right?

17. Fold the feather part along the dotted line.

Fold it inside as picture No.18 shows.

Fold it the same way for the other side too.

18. We will make a head part.

Fold it along the dotted line and fold it inside as picture No.19 shows.

19. We will make legs.  Cut it along the red line with scissor.

20. Fold them along the dotted lines and fold each tip inside, as picture No.21 shows.

21. And it’s done!

The legs looks great as if the ostrich was about to run.

It’s slender and looks cool, right?

You can draw its face or feathers with a pen too!

It might be fun to make an origami zoo, folding other animals too.
